Jean-Louis started his hardware career as a specification writer for a distributor in the UK.
He quickly recognized the complications architects face when seeking consulting service from distributors, who also need to balance the needs of contractors.
“I knew that architects could get better service and value from a consultant who is dedicated to supporting the design team, not selling and distributing products,” says Jean-Louis. “That is what makes Total Opening Consultants a great fit for me and for the industry as a whole.”

Hardware Consultant Steve McRae is a veteran of the door and hardware industry who has a passion for education and working with people. Steve joined the door and hardware industry in 1986 when he landed a sales job with a hardware distributor. Over several years, Steve built up his knowledge of a wide range of products, including residential and commercial hardware, high-end designer lines, millwork hardware and commercial washroom accessories. Steve found fulfillment in meeting people, helping to solve issues and providing top-notch service to clients.
Within a few years, Steve developed an interest in writing hardware schedules and jumped into a new role as a hardware detailer and consultant. This led Steve to join the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI), where he earned the Architectural Hardware Consultant (AHC) accreditation and joined the Ontario Chapter’s Board of Directors.
Steve is well-versed in hollow metal, wood and aluminum doors, locksmithing, automatic door operators and the expanding world of electronic access control and keyless entry.
Steve has worked on projects from high-rises and universities to healthcare. Highlights include Terminal 1 at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, because of its complex security requirements, as well as the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, where he sourced the world’s smallest electric strike and coordinated oversized automated aluminum doors.
Working with architects is still Steve’s favourite part of his role. “Servicing architects full time is a great accomplishment for me,” says Steve. “The enjoyment of interacting with professionals and sharing my experience and knowledge is such a rewarding feeling.”
