Hardware Consultant Steve McRae is a veteran of the door and hardware industry who has a passion for education and working with people.
Steve joined the door and hardware industry in 1986 when he landed a sales job with a hardware distributor.
Over several years, Steve built up his knowledge of a wide range of products, including residential and commercial hardware, high-end designer lines, millwork hardware and commercial washroom accessories.
Consulting and Accreditation
Within a few years, Steve developed an interest in writing hardware schedules and jumped head first into a new role as a hardware detailer and consultant.
This led Steve to join the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI), where he devoted himself to their educational program and earned the Architectural Hardware Consultant (AHC) accreditation. His commitment to DHI includes a term on the Board of Directors for their Ontario Chapter.
Steve continued to delve into all aspects of the industry and is well versed in hollow metal, wood and aluminum doors, locksmithing, automatic door operators and the ever-expanding world of electronic access control and keyless entry.
With his long tenure in the industry, Steve has worked on many different types of projects, from high-rises and universities to healthcare. Highlights include Terminal 1 at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, because of the complex security requirements and the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, where he sourced the world’s smallest electric strike and coordinated oversized automated aluminum doors.
Passion for People
Beyond the interesting products, codes and applications, working with architects is still Steve’s favourite part of the industry. This passion made Total Opening Consultants a perfect fit as the next step in Steve’s career. “Servicing architects full time is a great accomplishment for me,” says Steve. “The enjoyment of interacting with professionals and sharing my experience and knowledge is such a rewarding feeling.”
